N7 Space, a Warsaw-based provider of critical software for space systems, has joined the industrial team of SAWA – 2nd Space Weather Nanosat, a mission contracted by the European Space Agency (ESA) to Creotech Instruments S.A. N7 Space will provide the mission’s software responsible for payloads management
Creotech Instruments has signed a EUR 13.9 million contract with ESA covering phases B, C, D and E of the SAWA mission. This follows the successful completion of the Phase 0/A feasibility study in 2025. It is the first mission in Poland’s history delivered to ESA on a “mission-as-a-service” basis with a Polish company as prime contractor and mission integrator. The contract also includes an option to extend data transmission services for ESA by two more years, worth about EUR 1.9 million.
Creotech Instruments leads the project as prime contractor, mission integrator and supplier of its HyperSat satellite platform. The Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CBK PAN) and Wrocław University of Science and Technology are responsible for the scientific instruments, and N7 Space is responsible for the payloads software.
SAWA will study the upper layers of Earth’s atmosphere and monitor how solar activity affects conditions in low Earth orbit. It will observe for up to three years and supply data for monitoring and forecasting space weather, including geomagnetic storms and high-energy particle emissions. These events can disrupt satellites, navigation systems, power grids and radio communications. The satellite will become part of ESA’s Distributed Space Weather Sensor System (D3S), which supports the Agency’s Space Safety Programme. Launch is planned for early 2029. Funding comes from Poland’s contribution to ESA’s Space Weather and Space Safety programmes.
For N7 Space, SAWA is another project that uses the company’s experience in critical on-board software development for space industry. The mission also strengthens Poland’s position in the European space sector and supports ESA’s growing effort to protect critical infrastructure from space weather.
